Ship equipment navigation
Ship equipment navigation
With modern facilities and automation, today's ships have multiple advanced systems of navigational aids that provide accurate data for sailing.
1. Gyro compass
It is used to find the right direction. Unlike magnetic compasses, gyro compasses are not hindered by external magnetic fields. It is used to find the correct North Pole position, which is also the Earth's axis of rotation, to provide a stable source of direction.
2. Radar
Sea ships rely on S-band and X-band frequency radar systems for navigation as it detects targets and displays information on screen such as the ship's distance from land, any floating objects (islands, rocks, icebergs, etc.), other ships and Avoid collision with obstacles.
3. Magnetic Compass
Independent of any power source, used to determine the vessel's heading and display its readings at the main steering position
4. Auto Pilot
The autopilot is considered one of the most effective bridge navigation devices because it helps human operators control the vessel by maintaining the autopilot's steering, allowing them to focus on broad aspects of the operation.
5. ARPA
An automatic radar mapping aid shows the position of the ship and other nearby ships. Radar shows the position of nearby ships and chooses a course for the ship by avoiding any type of collision.
6. Automatic tracking assistance
Just like ARPA, Auto Track Assist graphically and numerically displays information on tracked targets to generate planning layouts for safer, collision-free routes.
Generally, large targets with a circumference of 800 m or more are considered land and not tracked. Echoes less than 800 m are considered targets to be tracked.
7. Speed and range measuring device
Used to indicate the speed and range of the ship relative to the water;
8. Echo sounder
There are many modern ship navigation tools on board, and the echo sounder is one of the instruments that has been in use for nearly 100 years. It is used to measure the depth of water below the bottom of a boat using sound waves, which work by the transmission of sound waves and an audio pulse that bounces off a reflective layer back to the source as an echo.
9. Electronic Chart Display Information System
ECDIS is the development of a navigational chart system for naval vessels and ships. With the use of electronic navigation equipment, it is easier for ship sailors to locate and get directions easier than before.
10. Automatic identification system
AIS is also one of the types of navigation systems that help to pinpoint the ship's position and other navigation statistics. AIS uses VHF radio channels as transmitters and receivers to send and receive messages between ships.
All ships of 300 gross tonnage and above on international voyages, non-international voyages of cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and above, and passenger ships of whatever size, shall be equipped with 1 Automatic Identification System (AIS) in accordance with the following requirements
11. Rudder angle indicator
The rudder angle indicator, as the name suggests, provides the rudder angle. A display is provided on the wheelhouse equipment console, allowing the vessel navigator to control the vessel's turn rate and rudder angle. The bridge wing and engine control room also provide instructions.
12. Voyage data recorder
VDR or Voyage Data Recorder is an important instrument in the list of ship's navigation equipment, it is installed on the ship to continuously record important information related to the operation of the ship. It contains at least the last 12 hours of recording system. The records were recovered and used in the investigation of the accident.
13. Rate of turn indicator
This navigation tool indicates how fast the vessel is turning at a steady speed (useful during pilotage and manoeuvring), usually displayed as degrees of turn. The speed at which the ship turns in degrees per minute. This essential tool helps the captain navigate the course safely.
14. GPS receiver
Suitable for position determination and updating by automated equipment at any time throughout the intended voyage of the vessel
