Type of Marine wind vane and anemometers

Marine wind vane and anemometer on a boat is especially useful for sailors because the information gained from both instruments can help make crucial weather-related decisions.

Different types of wind speed and direction sensors exist on the market, but one of the most commonly used are the propeller type wind speed and direction sensor and cup anemometer with wind vane.

The propeller-type wind speed sensor

This type of sensor consists of a propeller that spins in response to wind and a wind vane that rotates in response to changes in the wind direction.
The propeller-type wind speed sensor is designed to measure wind speed. The propeller is mounted horizontally to allow it to spin freely when the wind blows across it. The number of rotations per minute (RPM) is proportional to the wind speed. The sensor can convert the RPM to an electrical signal, which is then used to calculate wind speed.

The cup anemometer with a wind vane

Another popular sensor used for measuring wind speed and direction is the cup anemometer with a wind vane. The cup anemometer consists of three or four cups that rotate about a vertical axis, and the wind's speed is proportional to the number of rotations of the cups. The wind vane rotating at the top of the anemometer determines the wind direction using a similar potentiometer configuration to that of the propeller-type wind speed and direction sensor.
