Digital Selective Calling is a digital signalling system that operates exclusively on VHF channel 70, which is 156.525 MHz. Unlike traditional voice communication, where you broadcast on channel 16 and hope someone is listening, DSC sends a brief digital burst that carries specific information directly to a targeted recipient.
Think of it this way. Traditional VHF is like standing in a crowded room and shouting until someone answers. DSC is like sending a text message that rings only the phone you are trying to reach. The digital burst lasts less than one second, but in that fraction of a second, it transmits the vessel's MMSI number, position, time, and-in a distress situation-the nature of the emergency.
The MMSI: Your Marine Phone Number
Before DSC does anything useful, the radio must be programmed with a Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number. This is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to your vessel. It is like a telephone number for your boat.
Without an MMSI, the DSC functions on your radio will not work. You can still use the radio for voice calls, but the distress button will not send your position, and other DSC-equipped vessels will not be able to call you directly.
The MMSI must be permanently programmed into the radio. You cannot just type it in each time you use it. Once programmed, every DSC transmission you make includes that MMSI, so the receiving station knows exactly who is calling.
How DSC Actually Works
When you press the red distress button and hold it down-the exact duration varies by manufacturer-the radio transmits a DSC distress alert on channel 70. That alert contains your MMSI, your GPS position (if the radio is connected to a GPS receiver), and the nature of your distress if you have selected one.
The alert is sent automatically and repeats at approximately four-minute intervals until it is acknowledged by a coast station or another vessel. Once the alert is sent, the radio automatically retunes to channel 16 for the follow-up voice communication. The distress alert gets their attention. The voice call provides the details.
For routine calls, the process is similar but less urgent. You enter the MMSI of the vessel you want to call, select the channel you want to use for the voice conversation, and send the DSC call. The called radio rings-literally makes an audible alarm-and the operator can accept or decline the call. If they accept, both radios automatically switch to the selected working channel.
The Different Types of DSC Calls
DSC is not just for distress. The system supports multiple categories of calls, as specified in IMO Resolution A.803(19).
Distress calls are the most critical. They are initiated by the dedicated red button, which must be a physically separate button-not a key on a standard keyboard or input panel. The button requires at least two independent actions to activate, which prevents accidental transmissions. When a distress alert is transmitted, the radio indicates the status of the transmission so you know it has been sent.
Urgency calls are for situations that are serious but not immediately life-threatening. You might use an urgency call if you have a mechanical problem that could become dangerous, or if you need to warn other vessels about a hazard. The procedure follows the "PAN PAN" protocol on the nominated working channel.
Safety calls are for important navigational or meteorological warnings. These are typically used to broadcast information about hazards to navigation, weather changes, or other safety-related information.
Individual calls are the routine ship-to-ship or ship-to-shore communications. You call a specific vessel directly, and only that vessel receives the initial alert. No one else on the channel hears the ring.
All Ships calls broadcast to every DSC-equipped vessel within range. This is useful for urgent but non-distress information that needs to reach everyone in the area.
Group calls allow you to contact a predefined group of vessels-perhaps members of a yacht club or a fishing fleet-without disturbing everyone else on the channel.
The Regulatory Foundation
DSC is not optional. It is a core component of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Since February 1, 1999, SOLAS has required all passenger ships and cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and above on international voyages to carry DSC-equipped radios.
The performance standards are specified in IMO Resolution A.803(19), adopted on 23 November 1995. The equipment must provide for distress, urgency, safety, ship operational, and public correspondence calls using both voice and DSC. It must include a dedicated DSC watchkeeping facility that maintains a continuous watch on channel 70.
The technical details are equally specific. With a DSC modulated input signal having a level of 1μV e.m.f. to its associated VHF receiver, the DSC equipment must be capable of decoding the received message with a maximum permissible output character error rate of 10⁻².
The GPS Connection
A DSC radio without GPS input is like a phone without a number. The distress alert can still be sent, but it will not include your position. The receiving station will know you are in distress, but they will not know where you are.
That is why every fixed-mount DSC VHF radio sold today either has a built-in GPS receiver or interfaces with an external GPS via NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183. The GPS provides the position data that makes the distress alert actually useful.
When you transmit any DSC message-distress, urgency, safety, or routine-your position is included in the digital burst. That means the receiving station knows exactly where you are without you having to spell it out over voice.
What Happens When You Receive a DSC Distress Alert
When another vessel transmits a DSC distress alert, every DSC-equipped radio within range receives it. The radio sounds a distinct audible alarm that is different from any other alert. That alarm is designed to get your attention immediately.
Your obligation upon receiving a DSC distress alert is to cease any transmission that might interfere with the distress traffic and maintain a listening watch on channel 16. If the distress alert is not acknowledged within a short interval-typically about five minutes-and you are able to offer assistance, you should acknowledge by voice on channel 16.
You should never transmit a DSC distress alert relay unless you are actually in distress and have been unable to establish contact through other means. The system is designed to prevent unnecessary congestion on the distress and safety frequencies.
The Practical Reality
DSC is one of those technologies that seems complicated until you use it. Then it becomes obvious. It eliminates the uncertainty of voice calling. It automates the distress process. It provides position data automatically. It turns a VHF radio from a shouting device into a precision communication tool.
But DSC only works if the radio is properly configured. The MMSI must be programmed. The GPS must be connected. The operator must know how to use the functions. A DSC radio that is not set up correctly is just a regular VHF radio with an extra button that does nothing.
We design our VHF equipment with DSC because we have seen what happens when a vessel transmits a distress call the old way-shouting on channel 16, hoping someone hears, praying they write down the position correctly. DSC eliminates the guesswork. The position is sent automatically. The alert is received by every station within range. The response is coordinated.
The technology is mature. The standards are established. The requirements are clear. The only question is whether the equipment is installed correctly and the operator knows how to use it. Everything else is just noise.
